Saying Goodbye to Savannah
Our time in Savannah went by so quickly. I had big dreams of getting out and about and teaching the girls the history of Savannah. Instead, we saw a lot of the inside of WalMart and Bed, Bath & Beyond as we furnished and organized the boat to make it home. The girls crossed off the days until Daddy got back to the boat and we would set sail for Florida. While in Savannah we made friends with the people living on board there at the marina. All kept their eyes on us while Steve was gone. We will miss them and their friendly smiles.
Life at the dock was pretty quiet. We used this time to get used to the new living space, learning the rules of the boat. Most of our days were spent finding a routine for school and rearranging things. I'm happy to report we made it unscathed through the "tornado" watch weekend. I didn't sleep much, but had the most amazing sighting of a dolphin at 3 a.m. when I happened to be checking on the girls. Lightning struck as I looked out the window, it lit up the river and there she was, somewhat of a ghostly figure seamlessly swimming by. That moment is my highlight of our stay at the marina. The day before departing, the dolphins were very active in the river as if they were giving us a send off party. We loved being able to watch them so close to the boat.
We made the most of the few warm days we did have and went to the beach. I took the girls to Forsyth Park. They were more interested in the two playgrounds than they were the historical fountain constructed in 1858 and the 1879 Confederate War Monument. Saylor had no problems making friends. Huc-A-Poos just over the bridge on Tybee Island was a favorite stop for pizza. Much to the girls' delight, Ellie, an employee at the marina, got a puppy and would bring sweet little Molly to work with her. We took a little road trip to Charlotte, SC, and spent the weekend with some friends. It was nice to get off the boat for a few days. Tamora welcomed them with goodie bags filled to the brim with things to keep them busy. And they had a dog to boot for MJ to love on. We were spoiled!
Our friends Todd and Jacqueline made the trip with us to Ft. Lauderdale. We left Friday evening around 4 p.m. and arrived in Ft. Lauderdale Sunday by 5 p.m. Unfortunately, the seas were rough and both girls were sick the majority of the trip. While Dad and Todd manned the boat, Jacqueline and I nursed and comforted the girls. Sunday we pulled into Sylvia Lake, the boat was so still once we anchored you'd think we were on land.
